Though the name seems to suggest otherwise, heat pumps don’t just heat—they cool too! This makes heat pumps a great option for homeowners in Massachusetts and New Hampshire who have freezing winters and sweltering summers to contend with. A heat pump can supplement or even replace your furnace or boiler and air conditioner, allowing you to keep your home comfortable all year long with just one system.

Not only that, but heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient and could reduce your heating costs significantly. Thanks to the savings on your heating bills, your heat pump installation could eventually pay for itself, making your air conditioning virtually free.

Does a Heat Pump Cool as Well as an Air Conditioner?

When you use a heat pump for cooling, it acts almost exactly like an air conditioner, absorbing heat from inside your home and moving it out. Heat pumps and air conditioners both use electricity and a substance called refrigerant to accomplish this.

The only real difference between heat pumps and air conditioners is that heat pumps can reverse the process. When you use your heat pump to heat, it will absorb heat from the outside air, which is always present, even during the winter, and transfer it into your home. So, not only does a heat pump cool just as well as an air conditioner, but it also heats, making it the better option in many cases.

Ductless Mini Split Heat Pumps

Ductless mini splits, a type of heat pump, have the added benefit of being able to operate without ductwork. This makes them easier and more affordable to install than other types of HVAC equipment, and it also allows you to create comfort zones.

The outdoor component of a ductless mini split can accommodate multiple indoor air handlers, which means you can install a separate indoor air handler in every room. (An indoor air handler is the part of the heat pump that’s installed inside your home. It’s what the conditioned air comes out of, and it houses the controls.)

This allows you to cool different rooms to different temperatures. So, if you like to sleep in a very cold bedroom, but your kids like it to be warmer at night, you can set the individual units to the appropriate temperature and keep everyone happy and comfortable. Creating comfort zones can also help you prevent energy waste and save on your cooling costs.
